On Inheritance Tracks, where a guest chooses a piece of music they inherited and one they would pass on, Jonny Greenwood's inheritance comes from his sister, 10 years older, who went to college and left her records behind: Joy Division, Iggy Pop, New Order and Magazine, whose song he picks. An older sibling, his theory goes, makes all the questionable mistakes so the younger one does not have to, and hands over the results.

The household itself was silent. He does not remember his mother ever putting a record on, so music had to be sought out. The first single he managed to get, by Squeeze, was thrown away by his mother, who took it for a dangerous punk influence partly because it was pink. Later he and Colin Greenwood listened to Colin's records obsessively, trying to get everything out of every song.

Jonny is warm about his mother, now a retired nurse, who raised three children alone, encouraged the music and drove him and his brother to rehearsals in village halls around Oxfordshire in a Talbot Horizon. That, he notes, is about as unrough a beginning as a band can have. He admits he should probably have been stealing cars, and was instead happily sitting around with other recorder players.
