Stanley Donwood
Gareth Evans, who wrote an essay for the Kid A Mnesia catalogue, hosts this longer conversation with Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood at Christie's, held for the How to Disappear Completely exhibition and built from questions sent in beforehand. He opens with a strange prop. An office at Christie's had been sealed and forgotten since the mid-1990s, and out of it came a working fax machine, which leads the talk to time, obsolescence and the 21 years since the records were made.
Donwood describes making marks on a canvas, leaving the room and coming back to paint over them, working fast because deliberation was killing the work. Yorke values being able to walk in, bounce an idea off him and walk out again.
Being an artist, Donwood remembers, used to be a niche thing, a small group of people who all knew each other. The internet is a community, he says, that still carries an air of oppression in the way it physically works.
