Phil Selway on BBC Radio 6
Phil Selway keeps an audio diary of a week playing a different independent venue every night, for Independent Venue Week's tenth anniversary, and narrates the nerves rising before each show without embarrassment.
Each entry starts with the history of the room he is standing in. Norwich Arts Centre occupies a 14th-century church, converted in the 1980s, which hosted early shows by bands who went on to become very famous. At Cambridge Junction he notes that the last time he was in the old room was with Radiohead in October 1994, and that the venue reached its 30th anniversary the day before lockdown began, after which it put its resources into keeping its staff.
On the way to Hebden Bridge he stops in a village outside Cambridge to show the listener the house where he was born in May 1967, and where his interest in drums began, with him playing them at three in the morning. His family discouraged him from going near a kit for the next decade, which he offers as a lesson in the power of being told no.
