Jonny Greenwood on BBC Radio 4
“Bending Hectic” began as a test of how far a guitar string could bend, and Jonny Greenwood hopes you can hear the pain.

Jonny Greenwood talks to BBC Radio 4 about Wall of Eyes, the Smile's second album, which the host says is out that week. He keeps writing with Thom Yorke because it is what he has done since he was 14 or 15 and it is hard to stop, and he borrows Yorke's picture of a studio full of half-finished canvases. “It still feels like we're the same awkward obnoxious teenagers as we were 30 years ago.” Rehearsals with Tom Skinner, the Smile's drummer, are exactly as confusing as anyone would imagine, and Skinner makes it sound good.
The arrangements don't feel complex to him. They were schooled by the Pixies, who kept songs under four or five minutes and were obsessed with not being boring, though you can't just do jump scares. “Bending Hectic” started as a way of finding out how far a guitar string could be bent, and he hopes you can hear how painful it is. Asked whether a lyric about the end coming is a message to Radiohead fans, he says they would never write songs about themselves. Nothing is more exciting, still, than a smallish room with a drummer and a guitar.
