Thom Yorke on Rolling Stone Italia

Daniele Luchetti, who directed Confidenza, does the talking here, about what it was like to make the film's score with Thom Yorke.

It began with an exchange of emails and a script sent on spec. Months later, with shooting under way, a song arrived with a note suggesting that if no solution had been found yet, perhaps they could work out whether to make the film together.

They watched the daily rushes together rather than the edit, Luchetti explaining scene by scene what he needed, and agreed that the music should always be slightly wrong for the scene. Both are very pleased with how wrong it is.

Yorke's demos existed while the film was still being shot, so Luchetti could direct with the music already in his head. That had never happened to him before, he says, and he built scenes knowing the music would carry their meaning.

He describes the score as three distant things held together: Yorke's voice run through effects until it no longer sounds like a voice, rhythm from Tom Skinner, and a string section.
