Ed O'Brien
Sook-Yin Lee catches Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway straight after a show in Ontario in 2001, and opens by asking how they manage to be so consistent, which neither can usefully answer. She then asks whether Thom Yorke gets a sore neck, which they can. Those muscles, Selway notes, have had a few years of practice.
The pair had seen Janet Jackson in concert the night before and enjoyed it enormously because it is the polar opposite of what they do. O'Brien describes her moving between something delicate and something commanding with real admiration, before Lee tries to cast the two of them in the same roles.
Asked whether they exchange looks on stage, they say the nasty ones have gone, replaced by the winking and nodding of a band that has played together long enough to approve of each other.
The audience that night was in a good mood, a Friday crowd audible over the quieter songs, and they make the point that some of the best performances in a room come from the people watching.
