Phil Selway
The presenter at this Peruvian station is visibly delighted to be the first in the country to speak to anyone from the band.
Phil Selway is straightforward about where music came from for him. At school he was, in his own words, a non-event academically and at sport, and being in a band was the first thing he could do well enough for people to say so. He took drumming seriously from around 18.
His interest in songwriting came first and his drumming grew out of it, which is why he thinks about how a drum part can serve a song rather than what it can do on its own.
Asked about the complexity of his playing from Kid A onwards, and teased about being good at maths, he says the opposite is true. If he starts analysing what is happening in the music it comes unstuck. He plays by ear, responds to what he hears, and his best ideas arrive that way.
The conversation ends on OK Computer at 25, and why a record about alienation and technology has kept finding new listeners.
