This is the second part of a European television interview from the Kid A period, recorded with Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway after a show in Berlin. Selway is asked whether the record needed a different way of drumming. The emphasis had moved to rhythm, he says. Where his job used to be to accentuate a song's dynamics, here it was to find a pattern or groove solid enough to build a song on, with programming and other sources of rhythm alongside and the aim of staying open about where a beat might come from.

The interviewer passes on a friend's remark after a show, that it is remarkable for a band to make a record like this and then play it to 10,000 people, when almost anyone else trying it would empty the room. The band agree and know why. OK Computer bought them the benefit of the doubt, so people would listen to the next one several times before deciding.

Having no pressure from a label and no obligation to sell is empowering and frightening at once, they say. Going out on a limb loses a band some people, and the ones who stay are the ones interested in watching it travel somewhere.
