Another upload of the 2007 conversation with Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien for Japanese television, about the four years before In Rainbows.
The band took 2004 off entirely, spent 2005 rehearsing and producing themselves without getting anywhere, and toured in 2006 without getting much further. Proper recording began that autumn, and the bulk of it was done in 2007.
Yorke objects to records being pressed into the same shape as everything else and racked alongside it like sausages, and says doing things differently was a fundamental reason for the band to carry on at all. A physical object in shops still mattered, he insists, because not everyone has the internet or knows how to use it.
They end on touring Japan: a round arena outside Tokyo that he compares to standing inside a cauldron, and an earlier visit to the south of the country during the OK Computer years, where he wrote the words to “Airbag”.
