Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien say sorry to New Zealand on TV3

first posted on Treefingers by Miro, Jaro · rewritten for the archive

Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien told TV3 News on Tuesday 20 April that they were sorry Radiohead are not playing New Zealand this year, because the country has no venues big enough for them. They remembered that New Zealand gave the band their first gold record outside the United States.

The two were in New Zealand for interviews in the gap between the tour's last Japanese show, at Makuhari on 18 April, and the first of two nights at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on 23 April. O'Brien also went on James Coleman's breakfast show on Channel Z on the morning of Wednesday 21 April.

Selway said that although the band's record contract has run out, he is confident they will make a new album. Both said Radiohead are taking most of the rest of the year off from recording; the TV3 reporter, not the band, then told viewers not to expect a new album before late 2005. O'Brien talked about his son, and how becoming a father has changed the way he sees the band.

Radiohead last played the country in January 1998, in Auckland and Wellington, though O'Brien and Selway were back in 2001 to play Auckland with Neil Finn. On the next tour, Selway and O'Brien said, the band mean to give themselves more time so they can play more shows, and they promised to make it up to New Zealand.
