The campaign, run by a group of Friends of the Earth organisations, asks the governments of 17 European countries, the UK among them, each to accept emissions limits of its own, binding in law, with cuts every year.
The Big Ask is Friends of the Earth's British campaign, which pressed the UK government for carbon dioxide targets. The new campaign also wants cuts in other emissions.
Yorke says only national governments and the EU can put the necessary structures in place, which is why the campaign starts in 17 countries at once.
We will never wake from the nightmare of climate change unless our national governments and the European Union act
