Radiohead's music for Split Sides is out on DVD

written up for the archive

A two-DVD set of Merce Cunningham's dance Split Sides, with music by Radiohead and Sigur Rós, is on sale now from Microcinema, Sigur Rós announced on their website on 16 April. Amazon and other shops will carry it from 30 June. The set is NTSC only for now, and Sigur Rós have asked anyone who wants a PAL edition to tell Microcinema.

Split Sides had its premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in October 2003. Each band wrote about 20 minutes of new music for it. Before every performance a throw of dice sets the order of everything: music, decor, costumes, lighting and choreography. That first night was the only time either band played it live; later performances used recordings. Sigur Rós put their half out on the EP Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do.

The films are by Charles Atlas, shot in 2006 at the 45th and 46th performances of the piece, which Cunningham titled Split Sides 45 and Split Sides 46. Over two discs and 252 minutes it holds four of the 32 possible versions of the work. On each film, the distributor says, the viewer chooses which band plays under which half of the dance, in either order, or turns the music off altogether.
