The Book of Life, the animated film Guillermo del Toro has produced for 20th Century Fox, opens in American cinemas today with “Creep” in it, sung as a mariachi number by Diego Luna.

Jorge Gutierrez, directing his first feature, asked Radiohead for the song, and he says the band felt the way the film uses it is what the song is for. In July he said he had expected his choice of songs to be replaced at some point. After we got 'Creep,' every band said 'wow you got Radiohead.' That made it easier.2

Luna voices Manolo, a young man who wants to be a musician. On the soundtrack album, out from Fox Music since 26 September, his “Creep” runs a minute and 20 seconds.

Gustavo Santaolalla, the film's music supervisor, gave songs by Mumford & Sons, Elvis Presley, Rod Stewart and Biz Markie the same mariachi and norteño treatment. Gutierrez calls the selection the playlist of his life. Using norteño and mariachi music communicates to the audience Mexican culture is international1, del Toro says.
