Philip Selway picks the eight records that made him
Philip Selway, Radiohead's drummer, has chosen the eight albums that shaped him for musicOMH's This Music Made Me, writing about each one himself. The feature comes ahead of his February dates for Weatherhouse, his second solo album, including a night at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall.
The first is a cassette he had growing up in Oxfordshire, with Lou Reed's Transformer on one side and The Velvet Underground And Nico on the other, and the turning of that tape, he says, measured out his teenage years. The Beat's I Just Can't Stop It was a present for his 13th birthday, and he still listens to it more than 30 years on.
Some of the choices are a drummer's. He thinks he has taken a good deal over the years from Stephen Morris, Joy Division's drummer, though Unknown Pleasures took him a while to like. He came back to Mark Hollis's solo album on long bus journeys during Radiohead's 2012 tour. Nick Drake has been an influence on his own songs. David Bowie's Low, which he found through the film Christiane F., changed his idea of what an album could be.
He would have loved to see Bob Marley And The Wailers live. I would have probably given up being a musician as I suspect I'd have left the show thinking “I could never be that good”.
