On the main Official Albums Chart it went in at number 13.
XL released it on 26 October, the day the film opened in Los Angeles and New York; it opens across the US today. It is Yorke's first film score, 25 pieces over two discs, most of it instrumental, with a handful of songs that Yorke sings. Five pieces came out ahead of the album, starting with “Suspirium” in September, when the record was announced.
The film is set in Berlin in 1977, and Yorke went to that city and that year for his sound rather than echoing Goblin's famous score for Dario Argento's original. He made it with the producer Sam Petts-Davies and the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir under Hugh Brunt. His son Noah plays drums on “Has Ended” and “Volk”.
Simon Tucker of Louder Than War, writing four days before release, ranked it the best thing Yorke has made outside Radiohead since The Eraser in 2006, and said he should write for film more often. James Bentley gave it four stars in DIY, judging that Yorke got out from under Goblin's shadow by going somewhere else entirely, to strings, choir and piano. Several reviewers named “Unmade”, which closes the first disc, as the best thing on the record.
