The Smile release “The Smoke”, with six guests from London jazz
The Smile released “The Smoke” on XL on 27 January. It is their second single, after “You Will Never Work in Television Again” at the start of the month.
Jonny Greenwood plays the bass line the song is built on, The FADER reports, and Thom Yorke sings falsetto from start to finish. The band played an earlier version in Glastonbury's Live at Worthy Farm stream last May. The studio take keeps the odd time signatures and the muted Afrobeat figures and piles horns and woodwinds on top, and Clash traces the drumming back to Tony Allen.
Theon Cross, who plays tuba beside Tom Skinner in Sons of Kemet, is one of six guests on it, and his brother Nathaniel Cross plays trombone. Nigel Godrich produced it.
The band say more new music will follow in the coming months. Before that come their first shows with an audience, on 29 and 30 January: three sets in the round at Magazine London, sold out and each streamed live around the world.
The video is by Mark Jenkin, the BAFTA-winning writer and director of Bait, shot on 16mm film. It is billed as a lyric video, and most of the lyrics in it cannot be read.
