1 The Radiohead rehearsals his brother Colin mentioned last month he calls fun and natural.
He answered Andrew Trendell's questions by email, still recovering from the infection that put him in intensive care in July and cancelled The Smile's August tour. He puts himself at 90 per cent of his strength. Until he is fully well he is working only on film music and keeping away from the stress of a band, and that was his answer when asked whether The Smile will tour their new album.
Cutouts came out last Friday, nine months after Wall of Eyes. Jonny says the band had about a record and a half when they chose to release Wall of Eyes, and Cutouts was a matter of finishing the other songs. There's certainly no sense that these are leftovers: it's just another record.
1 The speed comes from small teams that can move quickly, where a Radiohead record needs more resources, and from the energy the band had stored up when they started. What the producer Sam Petts-Davies brings, he says, is warmth, patience and good mezcal.
Asked what The Smile, his band with Thom Yorke and Tom Skinner, could teach Radiohead, his whole answer was Warm-up rooms.
1 On tour they kept a small dressing room with drums, bass and guitar in it, and it became the place to play new songs together during the day, so the songs kept changing on the road.
Colin's photo book How to Disappear, out on 15 October, shows what being in a band is really like, Jonny says, though he pulls the same alarmed face in nearly every picture Colin has taken of him.
Many of the guitar parts on Cutouts turn on a delay pedal. A few years ago Jonny decided to use nothing but a guitar, a delay pedal and an amp for a year or two, to see what he could write inside that limit. It's still giving me ideas – probably to the point of nausea for Thom and Tom, but maybe there's still room for a few more on the next record.
