Colin Greenwood on CJAY 92

Colin Greenwood talks to the station before a sold-out show in Calgary, from what seems to be an ice hockey penalty box.

Asked why there are only 12 North American dates when the record is so big, he is frank about what the previous six years had cost. The band had toured and recorded more or less without a break since 1992. They came back to North America to thank the people who had supported them, and kept it short to have time with family and friends and to rebuild their lives at home. A band that goes away again without doing that, he says, stops being human beings and turns into sad rock and roll people.

On the album topping a British magazine's poll he is pleased and awkward at once. Any right-minded band with an aggressive label behind them would ride the publicity until doomsday, he says, and their own instinct is to disappear for a few months and come back with something new.
