Jonny Greenwood on 3FM

Jonny and Colin Greenwood tell the Dutch station 3FM about forty new songs and long albums. “It coincides with us starting to really hate long albums,” one of them says. Nigel Godrich comes down from London, they work from four till midnight on a curry from Oxford, and the song titles go round the kitchen table on bits of paper. In the end the song titles are picked from a silk top hat. There are seven possible titles for the album so far, and the hat may settle that too.

Jonny agrees with Colin that it is quite a dark record, and thinks anyone who likes “Exit Music”, “Airbag” or the B-side “Talk Show Host” will like it. One new song, “Egyptian Song”, is already out there on tape from the Tibet concert Jonny and Yorke played in Amsterdam a year ago. Asked for a favourite Radiohead song, Jonny picks “Street Spirit”, which sounded great when they started rehearsing again last week. Colin goes for “The Tourist” and “Talk Show Host”. “I like the slow ones because I'm older than Jonny.”

The tour goes out under a tent of their own, holding about 10,000, because they would rather make a neutral space than play sports halls covered in Coca-Cola adverts. The tent comes to Nijmegen's Goffertpark in September, announced on the programme. They talk about Can's “Halleluhwah”. On Billy Corgan breaking up the Smashing Pumpkins rather than fight Britney Spears, one of them says “I don't think many people have posters of Britney Spears and Billy Corgan on their walls.” They also weigh recording against playing live.
