Radiohead take over Radio 1's Evening Session from an attic room at Courtyard Studios outside Oxford, with the rain coming down outside, and put listeners' questions to each other out of a bag. Phil Selway is missing, having just become a father for the second time. Kid A has gone to number one in Britain and America in the same week, which they put down to a quiet week.

The first question is Ed O'Brien's football team: he became a Manchester United fan as a student in Manchester, walking up the steps of the Stretford End on a day United lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Jonny Greenwood squirms at being asked whether guitar rock is dead, then says the guitar is too old an instrument to be exciting for its own sake, like promising to revolutionise piano playing or Morris dancing. “Live wise, I think they're the best live band in the world by a long way,” O'Brien says of Asian Dub Foundation. Thom Yorke's favourite venue is the Roman amphitheatre at Fréjus, where he could see every one of about 3,000 people. On his wanders round a stage he likes to stare at one person until they work out what is happening; some look away and some make rude signs.

A listener asks whether Kid A is Leo Blair, and is told that Leo is the name of Phil's first son. Yorke says the title began as nonsense and ended up meaning the life form we are giving birth to, which will inherit the earth when we wipe it out in 50 years. The year 1999 troubled him far more than 2000, and apocalyptic pictures he could not get rid of went into the music. Being called wilfully perverse freaked him out a bit. The only fan to complain to their faces, one of them says, was a man called Mark in a supermarket, who was told to listen again.

Colin Greenwood, asked whether he has ever been jealous of another member, first separates jealousy from envy, a mix-up that winds him up, then owns to envying the soap, the washbag and the nicer-tasting toothpaste Ed kept when they shared rooms on tour. “You're such a liar,” comes from another corner.
