Radiohead on BBC Radio 1
Asked why Radiohead stopped making videos and then started again, they say they never stopped; the videos just weren't shown.
28 May 2003 · BBC Radio 1 · Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, Phil Selway
Thom Yorke goes into Radio 1's Live Lounge alone and plays “No Surprises”, dedicated to Donald Rumsfeld, “who announced today that they didn't have any weapons after all”. He plays “Everything in Its Right Place” and “Sail to the Moon” as well. Before that he, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway take questions the week “There There” is out; Jonny Greenwood is ill, after a curry. Asked why a band that hated interviews is suddenly so cheerful, they credit new pills and therapy.
Their last Glastonbury, in 1997, was the muddy year. One of them remembers it as Apocalypse Now, driving the van out at three in the morning and stopping again and again to check they weren't running over people lying in the mud. Another remembers playing “Lucky” and looking out at the fires going up into the hills.
Yorke describes Hail to the Thief, straight-faced, as sparkly and shiny and not in any way political, though the crazies are in charge. The others talk about the swagger the band found over two years of touring, which they wanted on the record, made quickly. Asked whether O'Brien or Selway sing on it, one of them says not much. After a summer of playing the songs live there were plans for three-part harmonies, but Yorke's voice was so good that they ended up on the cutting-room floor.
A listener points out that Kid A had almost no publicity, and the way people got the wrong end of the stick about why wound one of them up. “We weren't trying to piss anybody off, we just didn't want to do it.” Asked why they stopped making videos and then started again, they say they never stopped; the videos just weren't shown, like everything else.
