Colin Greenwood on Summer Sonic
Radiohead used to be known as Rainyhead, but this summer their audiences have needed sunblock instead of sou'westers.
1 August 2003 · Summer Sonic · Colin Greenwood, Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke and Colin Greenwood talk before Summer Sonic, the band's first Japanese festival and the last of a summer of them. Choosing festivals over their own shows was an experiment in playing to lots and lots of people, and so far they have got away with it. They didn't used to like outdoor shows, and wanted to get their heads round what was a monster for them. They used to be known as Rainyhead, but this summer their crowds have worn sunblock rather than sou'westers, and Hultsfred in Sweden had spectacular flies. Colin puts down music this quiet working in big spaces to Yorke's melodies and the dynamics of five people on a stage. Blind terror, one of them says, is much better than caffeine.
