Colin Greenwood on CRF
Most of the African music he listens to was recorded a while ago, he admits, and he is no more up to date on English music.
November 2012 · CRF · Colin Greenwood
Colin Greenwood makes the case for the Children's Radio Foundation, which trains young people in Africa to report on their own lives over the radio. He grew up on radio journalism, read Ryszard Kapuściński's books about Africa, and had it in mind for after college until rock took him instead. Most of the African music he listens to was recorded a while ago, he admits, and he could say the same about English or American music. As a bass player he loves how melodic and repetitive the bass is in African music, and names Fela Kuti, mid-1970s records from Nigeria and Ghana, and compilations sent to him by his friends Four Tet and Caribou.
