27 January 2014 · BBC 6 Music · Colin Greenwood

Colin Greenwood joins Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music as an ambassador for Independent Venue Week, and Lamacq has looked up where the band were that week in 1993: the Canterbury Exposé, then a day off, then the Y Club in Chelmsford. At the Princess Charlotte in Leicester the year before, they played “Creep” to about seven people. Andy, who promoted the place, rated Sugar the loudest band he had ever put on, before correcting himself to Hüsker Dü. For Radiohead the Jericho Tavern in Oxford was “a summit of our ambitions”.

On those tours they got about £5 a day each from the tour manager, spent it hunting for a Burger King with a veggie burger in Dudley or Derby, and drove home after nearly every show, even supporting Kingmaker. The one night they stayed out, in Stoke, the rooms had tea and coffee and a Corby trouser press. A listener whose band supported them at the Adelphi in Hull writes that Radiohead blew them away in front of their home crowd; Greenwood remembers the unimpressed dog by the mixing desk. Their sound engineer Big Jim, still with them, taped every show, and they played the cassette back in the van on the drive home down the M1. Touring taught Thom Yorke, Greenwood says, that a voice like his can only take so many beers and late nights.

Radiohead had a record company lending them money for tour support; new bands without that support have it harder now, he thinks, and need their local venues and promoters instead. He is co-curating a night with BBC Introducing at the Jericho Tavern on 1 February, with Glass Animals at the top of the bill. He saw Yorke briefly that morning, has been making plans with Ed O'Brien and Nigel Godrich, and saw Jonny Greenwood on Friday; Phil Selway is making his record.
