Colin Greenwood on BBC Radio Oxford
A card from Scott Walker, pencilled thanks for taking part in his Meltdown festival, has pride of place in Radiohead's studio.

Colin Greenwood comes on BBC Introducing in Oxford, late, on the night of an Independent Venue Week gig he has co-curated at the Jericho Tavern, with Glass Animals headlining. The station has the poster from the band's first show there, as On a Friday (their name at the time), which he started colouring in with red felt-tip at about 17 before deciding it was a bad idea. His advice to Glass Animals is what Mr Greaves, the tour manager who looked after Radiohead and Slowdive, told Radiohead every night for about 15 years, that if they enjoyed themselves the audience would too.
Small rooms are where a band learns its craft, he says, and watching bands from out of town at the Jericho made him think that if they could do it, so could he. The other extreme was Reading and Leeds, with the crowd what seemed like 5 miles away behind a D-shaped crush barrier. He wouldn't play the Jericho again, because it would annoy lots of people who couldn't get in to see the show. The last Oxford show was in South Park in 2001, round the corner from his house on Southfield Road, and he was home in time for a cup of tea.
The presenter asked Ronan Munro, editor of the Oxford music magazine Nightshift, for a question, and it was whether Colin is the nicest man in rock. Colin says no. He understands devoted fans because he is one: “if someone's moved you to that extent with like 2 minutes 40 seconds of music you will forgive them anything.” A white card from Scott Walker, pencilled thanks for taking part in his Meltdown festival, has pride of place in Radiohead's studio. The strangest night was a little club in New York in about 1996, before OK Computer, with Madonna, Courtney Love, Oasis and Blur in the room.
