Colin Greenwood on BBC 6 Music
Colin Greenwood still envies Thom Yorke the night James Brown asked him to introduce him at the Hollywood Bowl.
July 2017 · BBC 6 Music · Colin Greenwood
Colin Greenwood sits in for Craig Charles on 6 Music's Funk and Soul Show with a pre-recorded set of the music that taught him to play bass, and every half hour a track with the Motown bassist James Jamerson on it. Some are songs he covered with a funk band on the college ball circuit. Others came from the big sister who introduced him and Jonny to lots of music, like “Harlem Shuffle”, and the Capitols' “Cool Jerk” had the brothers bouncing round the front room. Betty Davis reached him on a DAT in the 1990s from Paul Kolderie and Sean Slade, who produced “Creep”. Radiohead are massive James Brown fans, and Colin still envies Thom Yorke the night, about ten years ago, when Brown asked him to introduce him at the Hollywood Bowl.
Q-Tip once came to their village in a full Nigeria football kit to talk to Nigel Godrich about a record, just as Godrich had to dash to Lincolnshire to see the desk the Sex Pistols made Never Mind the Bollocks on, which the band were buying. Colin was left to look after him, and they spent the afternoon on disco from a Japanese compilation Q-Tip had brought. At home, Colin's six-year-old son, raised on videos of New York breakdancing, heard the music, came downstairs and started spinning on his back.
While Radiohead were making Kid A in France, he had a VHS of a BBC soul night with Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers on it. “I wore that tape down to the nub cuz it was so amazing.”
