Colin Greenwood on BBC Radio 4
Colin Greenwood is on Radio 4's Today programme, talking to Martha Kearney the week Glastonbury was cancelled for a second year.
The question is about the industry rather than the music. Around 1,000 festivals were in doubt, and as many as 170,000 jobs with them, because cancellation insurance could no longer be had and organisers wanted the government to underwrite it; the counter-argument was that public money had already gone into a cultural recovery fund.
Greenwood calls Glastonbury the one festival in the world where a person can see none of the bands and still have the most extraordinary time. The view from the stage, he says, is frightening: 50,000 or 60,000 people in front of the band, and as many again elsewhere on the site having a completely different evening.
His real worry is the crew. Some of the people working with the band have been with them since 1991 or 1992, which makes them family, and if they cannot keep going, the infrastructure needed to start touring again will not be there when touring is possible.
