Colin Greenwood makes the case for touring musicians under the new post-Brexit arrangements, and he has done the reading. Touring is a long-lead business that needs at least nine months of planning before anything can be booked, so he wants the government's proposals now, not after the pandemic lifts. He asks for two things in particular, visa support services and help with customs carnets.
Bands at his level will be fine, he says. They have accountants and lawyers to absorb the new paperwork and the cost of moving people and equipment. The ones who cannot are the bands whose early years are spent going back and forth across the Channel playing small rooms, learning the craft and building an audience, which is how Radiohead learned to work together.
He cites Elton John's piece in the Guardian and the £5.8 billion the UK music industry contributed in 2019. That money did not appear from nowhere, he says. It came from years of musicians, technicians and promoters learning their trade together.
