Sing a Song for You
A Tim Buckley song Thom Yorke sang on his own, in a San Francisco plaza and then on the main stage at Reading.
1969
happy sad
Tim Buckley put it on Happy Sad in 1969. It is a plain, unguarded song from a singer whose records got stranger every year until he died at 28.
1993–97
yorke on his own
Thom Yorke opened with it when he played four songs by himself at a free show the radio station Live 105 put on in Justin Herman Plaza, San Francisco, on 11 July 1993, before “Thinking About You”, “Creep” and the unreleased “Killer Cars”.
At Reading on 27 August 1994, on the main stage a year after the band had pulled out of the festival over trouble with his throat, he began the set singing it unaccompanied until the others came in with “Bones”. It turned up again in Hanover on 10 November 1997, in the middle of the second encore, after the band had started “The Tourist” and given up on it. They went back to “The Tourist” afterwards and got through it.
