Radiohead release Pablo Honey and go straight back on the road

written up for the archive

Pablo Honey, Radiohead's first album, is out today on Parlophone on LP, cassette and CD, and the band play Sheffield University tonight, then Paris tomorrow, where they record a Black Session for France Inter. Its 12 songs open with “You” and “Creep” and close with “Blow Out”, and both singles are on it: “Creep” from last September and “Anyone Can Play Guitar”, released at the start of the month.

Parlophone's postcard for the album bills it as the debut, gives “Out 22nd February” and lists seven gigs starting in Manchester on Wednesday. Its one press quote, Peter Paphides' line about the buzz round Radiohead with the swear word in asterisks, comes from his review of the band's ULU show in Melody Maker last month.

Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, the American producers, recorded the album at Chipping Norton Studio in Oxfordshire and mixed it at their Fort Apache studio in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Chris Blair mastered it at Abbey Road, and Icon designed the sleeve around photographs by Tom Sheehan. The booklet lists Jonny Greenwood as “Jon Greenwood”, on lead guitar, piano and organ. It sets two tracks apart, “I Can't” and “Lurgee”, recorded at Courtyard Studio in Oxfordshire and produced by Chris Hufford, one of the band's managers; for “Lurgee” the band kept an earlier recording.
