Thom Yorke is writing a song for Cyndi Lauper

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke is writing a song for Cyndi Lauper. He told Ailsa Ross of the Glasgow University Guardian about it before Radiohead's support slot with James at the Barrowlands on 1 December.

Actually, I'm writing a song for Cyndi Lauper. I think she's got a wonderful voice, I hope she likes it.

He describes himself as worn out, emotionally and physically. Radiohead have opened for Levitation, Sultans of Ping and James, and been badly treated by all manner of people along the way. Yorke enjoys the challenge of winning over another band's fans, but he has had enough.

We never want to support anyone ever again.

He denies that the touring has become too much, though playing the old songs is frustrating and the band want to get on with a new album. What keeps them on the road is the re-release of “Creep”, which they had always opposed. Yorke explains the U-turn. There was a lot of pressure, the press wanted us to do it, and let's face it, we need them on our side.1 Asked whether that makes them “that Creep band”, he calls it the understatement of the year, then admits they need the success. He doesn't count “Creep” among the best songs he has written.

The Barrowlands gave them, Ross writes, the worst reception they have ever had in Glasgow. Yorke told the crowd from the stage that nobody could say he wasn't trying.
