Radiohead end 1995 with four radio Christmas shows in California
Radiohead have finished their year with four radio-station Christmas shows on four nights in California, from Live 105's Green Christmas in Berkeley on Friday 15 December to two nights of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles.
They opened the ten-act Berkeley bill, a sold-out benefit for the Wilderness Society that Oasis closed. Barry Walters of the San Francisco Examiner had them down as one-hit wonders and found a band that rocked hard instead, Thom Yorke looking ready to explode as three guitars roared. He calls them the night's other news besides Oasis. He also reports that k.d. lang has named The Bends her favourite album of the year. The next night Radiohead played KOME's Almost Acoustic Christmas in San Jose.
The KROQ shows were on Sunday and Monday at the Universal Amphitheatre, with Bush headlining both nights. Troy J. Augusto, reviewing both nights for Variety, picks out Radiohead and Alanis Morissette as two acts who have grown since their earlier shows in the city, and singles out Radiohead's “Fake Plastic Trees”.
KROQ broadcast both nights live. On Monday they changed the set, opening with “Bones” and closing with Carly Simon's Bond theme “Nobody Does It Better” and then “Creep”.
