Radiohead cover Carly Simon at a sold-out Roseland
Radiohead closed a sold-out night at Roseland in New York on Friday with Carly Simon's “Nobody Does It Better”, and played three unreleased songs, “Electioneering”, “I Promise” and “Lift”. Neil Strauss, reviewing the show for the New York Times, finds a band who are no longer a one-hit act.
“Creep” was played, though in a muted version that sounded reluctant to him, and “My Iron Lung” was sung in falsetto almost from start to finish. Strauss contrasts a restrained Thom Yorke, intent on his singing, with the man who careered round the stage at Tramps the year before, and places him in a British line running back through Mark E. Smith to John Lydon.
There were three guitars on stage. Yorke switched between electric and acoustic and Ed O'Brien took the distorted rhythm parts, while Jonny Greenwood supplied the feedback in a pair of oversized headphones, worn to protect his ears after a recent infection.
