Thom Yorke plays a new song, “Motion Picture Soundtrack”, on WHFS

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke played a new song on acoustic guitar on WHFS's Just Passing Through in Maryland on 10 April, and told the station its title was a working one, picked partly with MTV in mind.

At the moment it's called 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' cause I thought that would be a really good way to get on MTV.

He hopes it makes the next album, for the tune more than anything. Asked to open with something new, though, he chose “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”.

“Lucky” went to War Child's Help album, for children in Bosnia who had lost their families. The band had never recorded it before, and every act was given a single day to make its track. The album was in the shops by the end of the week it was recorded, an idea Yorke credits to something John Lennon once said.

The band have come round to making videos, and Yorke rings the directors himself. Jake Scott made the expensive “Fake Plastic Trees”, which left them uneasy, and Paul Cunningham reshot “High and Dry” after they disliked the first version. What is said at the end of the “Just” video will never be disclosed.
