Radiohead headline T in the Park and play “Creep” to head off a riot

written up for the archive

Radiohead headlined the main stage at T in the Park on Saturday 13 July, at Strathclyde Country Park near Motherwell, in wind and drizzle, and Thom Yorke introduced “Creep” with a warning.

If we don't play this, there'll be a riot.

It came in the middle of the set, and the crowd, who had sung along to most of the night, climbed onto shoulders, held up lighters and sang it back. Sylvie Simmons, reviewing the show for Mojo, puts them at about 30,000, with Alanis Morissette second on the bill. She also passes on a rumour that Radiohead turned down big money to headline Reading for this and the Galway Arts Festival.

Three of the 17 songs were new: “Electioneering”, “Lift” and “No Surprises”, which opens on a music-box figure and which Simmons lists as “No Surprises Please”. At Pinkpop in the Netherlands earlier in the summer, she notes, the band had tried out seven.

Yorke told the crowd the band had been nervous about the show all the night before. He thanked Drugstore, who had played the King Tut's tent earlier, for covering “Black Star”. He complained about hammering from behind the stage, which Simmons traced to the NME tent. He nearly introduced “High and Dry” with a joke about the weather.

I guess you're wet and pissed off. Good, because this is a song called High And… No, that's too corny for fucking words
