Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood try four new songs at a Dazed & Confused party

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood played a surprise semi-acoustic set at the Tram Shed in London on 10 October, at the style magazine Dazed & Confused's party for its 25th issue, and four of their seven songs were new: “Lift”, “Let Down”, “No Surprises” and, to close, “Exit Music”.

Radiohead are working on their next album, which Melody Maker says is due in February. Robin Bresnark, who reviewed the night for the paper, rates the new songs highly and the party as the wrong place for them.

Yorke dedicated “Lift” to the coke freaks in the audience. “Let Down” drew the loudest response of the night.

Much of the room talked through the set, and Yorke let them know what he thought of it.

We appreciate the people who ARE listening. I think all the people who turn up for a free beer could afford to buy a f***ing pint.

archivist’s note

Melody Maker counts seven songs but names six; the setlist gives the six it names, in its order.
