Thom Yorke's 1992 stage banter turns up on an Oxford Christmas single

written up for the archive

Spunkle All Stars, an Oxford synth act, have built their new single “Where Will You Be This Christmas?” around Thom Yorke's talk between songs at an early Radiohead gig at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford. The single, out on Shifty Disco, catches Yorke introducing an instrumental with And now, to further our argument that pop is dead…1

The instrumental was the band's own “Hooked On Classics”, classical favourites over a disco beat. The gig was one of a series of nights on which young Oxford bands played old songs, and Radiohead also covered Glen Campbell's “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Money”, which NME gives as the Beatles' version.

A Radiohead spokeswoman told NME the band hear every day from people doing something with their music. Honestly, they're really not bothered.1

When was the gig?

NME gives December 1992. The site's show page, from setlist.fm, has the same three covers at the Jericho Tavern on 22 August 1992.
