Jonny Greenwood plays harmonica on Pavement's Terror Twilight

written up for the archive

Pavement's fifth album, Terror Twilight, is out today on Domino in Britain and Matador in America, with Jonny Greenwood on harmonica on two of its songs, “Platform Blues” and “Billie”. Nigel Godrich produced and mixed it, and NME reported in January that when Godrich decided part of the record needed harmonica, he asked Jonny.

The harmonica went on at RAK Studios in London late last year, near the end of sessions that had moved between New York and London since June. Recording was already running behind when Jonny and Godrich left the studio for a shop in Camden Town to buy a better harmonica. “Platform Blues” was still called “Ground Beef Heart” then, and Jonny's repeated phrase on “Billie” took several retakes. He's blowin' the Oxford blues, man!2 said Pavement's Mark Ibold.

When it was done, Jonny said I'd do anything for this band.2
