Johnny Hardstaff's film for two Amnesiac tracks premieres in Glasgow

written up for the archive

A short film set to two Amnesiac tracks, which Radiohead reworked and joined into one piece, had its first showing at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow on the evening of 29 November, and a fire alarm emptied the building during it. The screening started again once the fire brigade gave the all-clear.

The film was the highlight of the first Projectors Animation Festival. Susie Wilson of Picture On The Wall, the Glasgow animation company that made its computer graphics, introduced it. Johnny Hardstaff directed it for Black Dog, the company behind Aphex Twin's “Windowlicker” and Björk's “All Is Full of Love”, and it took four months to make.

“Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors” plays under killer whales swimming in the dark under ultraviolet light, with figures that can barely be made out. As it turns into “Like Spinning Plates”, a machine builds itself and a pair of conjoined twins, joined at the waist, spin in what looks like a centrifuge, until the crying infants' bodies swell and ribs of blue-patterned china push out through their chests.
