Radiohead's South Park cameo began with an Oxford T-shirt

written up for the archive

Radiohead voice cartoon versions of themselves in “Scott Tenorman Must Die”, an episode of South Park first shown on Comedy Central in the US at 10pm on 11 July, and NME reports that it all began with a T-shirt. The band had asked the programme's creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, to design one for their concert in South Park, Oxford on 7 July, in a park that happens to share the cartoon's name, and the shirt was on sale at the show. In return, Radiohead recorded their voices for the episode in Santa Barbara, on the June leg of their American tour. Parker came to the Oxford show too, at the band's invitation, to see the park for himself.

NME calls it Radiohead's first appearance in cartoon form, and says Sky One is to show the episode in Britain before the end of the year and Channel 4 in 2002.

The episode is the fourth of the fifth season. Cartman is conned by an older boy, Scott Tenorman, and plots his revenge, with Radiohead part of the plan. They turn up at the end, at a chili cook-off, and, knowing nothing of what has just happened, make fun of Scott for crying.
