Bodysong, Simon Pummell's film with a score by Jonny Greenwood, opens in UK cinemas today, Friday 5 December, at the Odeon Wardour Street in London, the Showroom in Sheffield and UGC Glasgow. Oxford, the band's home town, has to wait until Boxing Day, when the Phoenix shows it for three days.
The film runs 83 minutes with no narration. It follows a human life from birth to death in home movies, newsreel and archive film from about a century of cinema, cut to Greenwood's score, and it took two and a half years to make. Last month it was named Best British Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards.
Channel 4's review asks whether a film with no narrator is really the documentary the judges called it, and calls it a hypnotic and sometimes brutal experiment, set to a score that is mostly abstract, with the only spoken words in the film's section on language.
Matt Langdon saw it at the AFI festival in Los Angeles in November and gives it four stars out of five on Filmcritic.com and praises Greenwood's score. He compares it to Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka, except that every shot in Bodysong is found footage. The graphic scenes (some 20 births and a couple of shootings) and the experimental form won't suit everyone, he warns, but he expects word of mouth to find it an audience.
