Atoms for Peace close MoMA PS1's Warm Up with three new songs
Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich, billed as Atoms for Peace, headlined the last night of MoMA PS1's Warm Up summer series in Long Island City, Queens, on Saturday 8 September, two days after the band put out “Default”, their first single. Before the DJ set proper they played three unreleased songs, Yorke singing over backing tracks while Godrich worked the decks. Brownstoner has a report of the night. Flea, the group's bassist, came along but only to hang out.
Fan footage of the three new songs from Queens was online within a day, and Fact likened the second of them to “Black Swan” from The Eraser. In April Yorke and Godrich had aired other unheard material in a DJ set at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. An album is due on XL in 2013.
The DJ set mixed Azealia Banks's “212” and Talking Heads' “Once in a Lifetime” with DJ Shadow, Beyoncé and the Supremes' “Baby Love”, and on a night of on-and-off rain it also took in Yorke's own “And It Rained All Night”, from The Eraser. The extreme weather forecast for the evening never came, and the sold-out crowd that packed the museum's courtyard stayed through the showers.
