Jonny Greenwood plays Steve Reich unannounced in Sydney

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood walked on unannounced at ACO Underground's concert at The Standard in Sydney on Sunday night, 2 December, and played Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint on his own, just over two weeks after Radiohead's Australian dates ended in Melbourne. Reich wrote the piece in 1987 for a guitarist playing live against recorded guitar parts, and Greenwood has played it before, at the Sacrum Profanum festival in Krakow in 2011.

ACO Underground is an electro-acoustic group of Australian Chamber Orchestra players and other musicians, with a repertoire that runs from Vivaldi to Radiohead. Before he came on, it played a few pieces Greenwood had written. Then Satu Vänskä, who fronts the group, brought him out to loud applause.
