Thom Yorke to score Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke will write the score for Luca Guadagnino's remake of Suspiria, Dario Argento's 1977 horror film, the production companies Frenesy Films and Mythology Entertainment announced on 10 May. It is his first score for a feature film. Argento's original was scored by the Italian band Goblin, led by Claudio Simonetti.

The new film is set in Berlin in 1977, where a young American dancer, Susie Bannion, joins a famous dance company and comes to suspect it is hiding something terrible. Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz and Mia Goth are in the cast, and so is Jessica Harper, the star of Argento's film. Amazon Studios is behind it. Shooting has finished and the film is in post-production, with no release date yet.

Yorke has written for the screen and the stage before. With Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack he scored The UK Gold, Mark Donne's 2013 documentary on tax avoidance, and he wrote the music for the 2015 Broadway production of Harold Pinter's Old Times with Clive Owen. Jonny Greenwood has scored Paul Thomas Anderson's films for a decade and is scoring Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here.

Yorke takes the job on as he heads back on the road with Radiohead for the European leg of the A Moon Shaped Pool tour. Our goal is to make a movie that will be a disturbing and transforming experience: for this ambition, we could not find a better partner than Thom3, Guadagnino says.
