Jonny Greenwood's Spencer score is out, with The Smile's drummer on it
Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack to Spencer is out today on Mercury KX, a week after Pablo Larraín's film opened in UK and US cinemas. Kristen Stewart plays Diana, Princess of Wales, over three days at Christmas 1991 on the Queen's Sandringham estate.
It is Greenwood's first film score since 2018, when Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread and Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here came out. Two more follow within weeks: Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog on 17 November and Anderson's Licorice Pizza later in the month.
The first piece from Spencer, “Crucifix”, came out on 15 October; the press material credits it to the London Contemporary Orchestra under Hugh Brunt.
Greenwood wrote in the baroque royal style and then, mid-performance, swapped the orchestra for jazz players, as he explained when he spoke to NME in September, on the day the film premiered at Venice. Those players are Tom Skinner of Sons of Kemet, who also drums in The Smile with Greenwood and Thom Yorke, the trumpeter Byron Wallen, the pianist Alexander Hawkins and the bassist John Edwards. “Delusion / Miracle” is the freest piece on the record.
