Radiohead's Kid A Mnesia is out, and goes in at number four
XL released Kid A Mnesia on 5 November, two months after the band announced it. It sets Kid A and Amnesiac beside a third album, Kid Amnesiae, found only in the set. It's a coming of age for Kid A & Amnesiac and it's joined by a new album, Kid Amnesiae, a memory palace of half-remembered, half-forgotten sessions & unreleased material
2, the band said on release day.
Kid Amnesiae has 12 tracks and runs about 34 minutes, with Nigel Godrich as producer. Two of its songs had never been released in any form: “If You Say the Word”, out as a single since September, and “Follow Me Around”, in its first studio recording, a single since 1 November with a video starring Guy Pearce. On “Pulk/Pull (True Love Waits Version)”, “True Love Waits”, the ballad the band played live from 1995 and only recorded for A Moon Shaped Pool in 2016, is sung over the machinery of the Amnesiac track “Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors”. “Pyramid Strings” and “How to Disappear Into Strings”, which closes the album, are the orchestral parts of “Pyramid Song” and “How to Disappear Completely” with the band taken away.
Kid A and Amnesiac themselves are not remastered; the set uses the original masters of 2000 and 2001. On the download, the untitled coda at the end of Kid A gets a track number of its own. The reviews have a page to themselves.
The chart published on 12 November has Kid A Mnesia as a new entry at number four on the UK Official Albums Chart, in the week ABBA's Voyage went in at number one. The Official Charts Company counts it as Radiohead's eighth top ten album. It also went in at number three in Ireland. On the Official Record Store Chart, which counts sales in the UK's independent shops, it is number one, ahead of Voyage.
