Thom Yorke sings on “Medicine” as Clark's Sus Dog comes out
Sus Dog, the tenth album by the British electronic musician Clark (Chris Clark), is out today on his own label, Throttle Records, with Thom Yorke credited as its executive producer. Yorke plays bass and sings on “Medicine”, the one song with his voice on it. Its video, out the same day, uses deepfake technology to blend the two men's faces, so that it is not always clear which of them is singing. Dylan Hayes of the production company Knucklehead directed it.
Sus Dog is the first record on which Clark puts his own singing at the centre, 22 years after his debut. He has said it began with him wondering what The Beach Boys would sound like if they took MDMA and made a rave record. He plays everything on it except the drums, which are Richard Spaven's, and Anika sings on the title track. He announced it on 24 January with “Town Crank”, the first Clark track to carry his own sung lyrics.
Clark remixed Yorke's “Not The News” in 2019, and Yorke remixed Clark's “Isolation Theme” in 2020. Once Clark had started singing he wrote to Yorke for advice. The first thing he sent me was him singing about being stuck between two floors and I was already sold.
1 Yorke took on the executive producer's role. I ended up being a kind of backseat driver as he pieced all the oddness of it together, which was fascinating.
