Song · Kid A / Amnesiac era (2000–01)
Fog
It has come out in three versions in 20 years, and no two are alike.
2000–01
alligators in new york sewers
The 2003 version of this site dates its first performance to Israel on 9 July 2000, with Thom Yorke on his own, announcing it as “Alligators in New York Sewers”. By August 2001 it had a proper name, and it came out on the second CD of the “Knives Out” single. Garbled synthesiser comes first, then the vocal arrives suddenly and very close, and then drums and tambourine swell underneath. The words are often read as being about a child, and about innocence lost.
2002–08
not on the written setlist
The archive's first full-band “Fog” is the Palacio de Congresos in Salamanca on 7 August 2002. In July 2003 Yorke and Jonny Greenwood played it as a pair at Le Réservoir in Paris, for the Arte programme Music Planet 2Nite, and that December they took it to a session at Maida Vale. It had been gone for nearly five years when the band played it in Osaka on 2 October 2008, in the second encore, although it was not on the setlist they had written.
2003–21
again, and again again
The Paris version, recorded live and called “Fog (Again)”, went onto the “Go to Sleep” single in August 2003 and the Com Lag EP the year after. The third, “Fog (Again Again version)”, came out on Kid A Mnesia in 2021, an alternative take.
