Melody Maker tips Radiohead as one to watch after the Powerhaus
Thom Yorke dedicated one song at the Powerhaus in London to people who say they can't do something when they really mean they don't want to. Before another he told the crowd, This is a song for creeps
1, and he ended the night by aiming a wanker gesture at them.
Ian Gittins, reviewing the show in this week's Melody Maker, finds Radiohead all elbows and angst, a band who want to leave a deep mark and haven't found the way yet. They grew in confidence as the set went on, and he found that heartening.
“Prove Yourself”, which he calls their debut single, could be early Pixies on record, but live it came across as a heavy-duty Housemartins. He thinks they fall back on white-noise frenzy too readily, yet with three guitars on stage a storm always seemed about to break, and his verdict is that they are intriguing brooders, worth following.
