Thom Yorke sings “Untogether” with Tanya Donelly in Chicago

Radiohead supported Belly at a sold-out Riviera Theatre in Chicago on Friday 15 October. Thom Yorke's voice was already spent from an acoustic in-store set shortly before the show, and still he came back at the end of Belly's set to sing their “Untogether” with Tanya Donelly, acoustically.

It was an early show, starting at 6pm, and Radiohead's second in Chicago this year after the Metro in June. On the recording Yorke mentions that night and says he is glad to see some of the same faces.

The day before, Bill Wyman's preview in the Chicago Reader paired the two as bands riding one fluke single each, Belly's “Feed the Tree” and Radiohead's “Creep”, and offered “Anyone Can Play Guitar” as proof Radiohead have a sense of humour.

Jae-Ha Kim, reviewing the night for the Chicago Sun-Times, found a young crowd and a bill that could have gone either way, with both bands on alternative radio, Radiohead with “Stop Whispering”. She heard Jonny Greenwood's fuzzy guitar leading the songs with authority, Ed O'Brien's rhythm guitar behind it. But she gave Belly the better night, and blamed Yorke's voice. In “Creep” he no longer had the strength to build from the quiet start to the loud finish.

The duet has been part of Belly's encore on this tour. Recordings have Yorke singing it with Donelly in Milwaukee the night before, at Marquette's Varsity Theatre, and at the Metropol in Pittsburgh on 11 October, where it ended with a kiss.
